The French Way, which can be considered to start either in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (a small town in the French Basque Country) or in Roncesvalles (a small village in the Navarrese Pyrenees), is the best-known and most frequented of all the Camino de Santiago routes, with a significant difference in the number of pilgrims (over 85% of the total) compared to the other routes. Its origin lies in three of the four main historic pilgrimage routes coming from inland Europe, which converge in the small village of Ostabat, just a few kilometers from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.
